How to find what you're looking for!

If you are not familiar with our websites you might find this information useful for you.

There are two ways of finding software titles in our directory:

A. Browse the categories on the left side of the page

Once you click on a main category it will open and list the subcategories inside. Click on any subcategory to see a list of programs you can download.

The list is sorted by default by the date when each program was released (most recent programs are shown first).

You will notice a navigation bar at the beginning and end of the list. It contains information about the number of programs found in that category, the number of pages (a page lists 10 software titles) and link to navigate from a page to another.

A second navigation bar is placed right below the first one. It allows you to resort the list by clicking on the corresponding links. You can sort the programs by Title (ascending), by Date (most recent programs first), Size (ascending or descending) and by number of Downloads (most downloaded programs are listed first).

Each program in the list is displayed on a different background:

  • Yellow indicates a free program.
  • Orange indicates a free-to-try program. This means you can download and try the program for a limited period of time. If you decide you like the program, you will need to buy it.
  • Green indicates a demo version of the program. You can also download and try it but usually it has limited functionality.
  • Purple shows that the program is commercial only. You cannot use it until you buy it.
  • Grey indicates an AD SUPPORTED program. You usually get a full version of the program but it will display ads and might collect information about your surfing habits.

Besides color, a small coloured vertical icon is also displayed near each program, following the same color code and mentioning the type of the program.

B. Use our search engine

info Note: When using the search engine you have access to an additional database of unsorted programs, which are not listed when browsing the categories on the left. Therefore if you do not find what you look for by browsing, we strongly recommend you to use our search engine.

At the top of the page, right below the site logo, you will notice a search bar.

To find a program simply type a few keywords in the box and select the search options. Keywords are words that describe what you look for.

Example: if you want to find a business planning software you might type 'business plan' in the search box. These are the key words the search engine is using to locate the relevant programs to display.

The search options you choose are very important for the results. You can decide to search in:

  • The title of the program
  • The description (a short text written by the author)
  • The keywords (these are words the author believed you might look for when searching his program)
  • The company name

Depending on what you know about the program you are trying to find you can use any of these options (e.g. If you know the name of the program it will be easier to find it by typing one or two words from its title and searching in 'Title'. If you are looking for a program that applies to a specific industry you can type the name of the industry and search in 'Description' or 'Keywords'.)

The last search option you can choose is whether to find results that include 'all the words' you typed or 'any word'.

How to increase the chances of finding the program you need

  1. Start searching for one or two keywords that you believe describe the program or the results of using the program, with 'all the words' option selected.
  2. If you don't find what you are looking for you try selecting 'any word' as a search option.
  3. Try searching in a different field of the database (e.g. 'title', 'description', 'keyword', 'company').
  4. Try using variations of the keywords (e.g. business plan, business planning, planner etc.)
  5. Try to think what other words might describe the program or what other uses it might have (e.g. if you are looking for a program to calculate the amount of glass you need to replace 10 windows you might realise that the same program is used to calculate how much wood is needed for 10 tables. You can therefore search not only for 'glass' but also for 'furniture' - this is a real example of how we helped someone finding a free program that he needed but was unable to find by searching directly).
  6. Finally, if you fail to find what you're looking for (although we have over 14.000 titles in our database) you can try dropping us an email with what you need. We will try to find it for you. (Please consider that it might take a while until we can deal with your request).
